Steve McClaren is refusing to look at the Premier League table until after the Wear-Tyne derby.
Newcastle United are bottom of the division after eight games.
And McClaren’s winless side are in desperate need of three points from Sunday’s home game against Norwich City.
That fixture is followed by a visit to the Stadium of Light on October 25, where they will meet Sam Allardyce’s Sunderland looking to end a run of derby defeats.
But the club’s head coach – who asked to be judged after 10 games earlier in the campaign – says he has not looked at the table.
“I don’t look, definitely not for the first 10 games,” said McClaren.
