Steve McClaren has admitted transfer deadline day was ‘perfect’ for him.

The Magpies didn’t buy or sell anyone on the last day of the window, having got the majority of their business done earlier in the summer.

Speaking for the first time to the media since the window closed, McClaren said it had all been a relief for him.

He said: “It was perfect for me. We did our business early. We didn’t need to do anything.”

Newcastle spent more than £50million in the summer on Georginio Wijnaldum, Florian Thauvin, Aleksandar Mitrovic, Chancel Mbemba and Ivan Toney.
