Steve McClaren's confident Newcastle United WILL stay up after watching his side climb out of the relegation zone.

The club beat West Bromwich Albion 1-0 at St James's Park thanks to a 33rd-minute goal from Aleksandar Mitrovic.

Cheick Tiote had earlier had a strike ruled out for offside, with Mitrovic having blocked goalkeeper Ben Foster's sightline.

United dominated the match from start to finish, but their inability to finish their chances led to a nervous final 20 minutes.

The result, and Norwich City's defeat at Aston Villa, saw Newcastle moved up to 17th place in the Premier League.

Head coach McClaren said: "It was imperative that we won the game.

"The game shouldn't have been close at the end. We had so many chances in those last 10 minutes.

"We also kept a clean sheet, and there was some great attacking play.

"And a great atmosphere from the crowd. If we continue to play like that and create, we'll be OK."
