Steve McClaren feels Newcastle United will climb away from trouble – if they replicate their efforts in the 1-0 defeat to Everton.

Tom Cleverley scored an injury-time winner for Roberto Martinez's side this evening.

Everton were the better team at a sodden St James's Park, but Newcastle had chances to take the lead themselves before Cleverley's late intervention.

The result left the club third-bottom of the Premier League ahead of Monday's game against West Bromwich Albion at The Hawthorns.

And United head coach McClaren said: "I thought there was some great defending, and Robbie Elliot was great in goal.

"Some of our attacking play second half – if we’d have scored first we’d probably have won.

"They’re down. They gave so much. That has to be appreciated. I told them I see a team in there.

"We’ll win games and get lucky sometimes. If we carry on like that, we’ll have a stronger second half.”
