Steve McClaren believes it is right to be “heavily incentivised” to win a cup and end the long wait for a major trophy – even if he admits he doesn’t know what the bonus is!

When McClaren was unveiled in the summer, managing director Lee Charnley revealed the head coach would benefit from a bonus if he won a cup competition.

“I haven’t got a clue what my bonus is!” said McClaren, when asked ahead of tonight’s Capital One Cup game.

“You should be heavily incentivised to win a cup, I think it is important. It is still a football match and I hate losing.”
