Steven Taylor is working through the summer in a bid to stake his claim under Steve McClaren.
The Newcastle United defender missed the second half of last season after rupturing his Achilles tendon in January, and the 29-year-old is working overtime in a bid to be ready for the start of pre-season next month.
Long-serving Taylor – who has one year left on his St James’s Park contract – has been working with the club’s physios at its Benton training ground, where he met new head coach McClaren after his appointment last week.
McClaren is already well-acquainted with Taylor, having called him up during his time as England manager. He selected Taylor for a match against Germany at Wembley eight years ago, but he did not make it off the bench.
On Facebook, Taylor wrote: “Looking forward to working under Steve McClaren – exciting times ahead.”
