CALLUM Roberts has caught the eye of England’s scouts after starring for Newcastle United.
The teenage forward was watched playing for the club’s Under-21s in Monday night’s win over Blackburn Rovers.
Roberts – who was called into the first-team squad for Newcastle’s game against Queens Park Rangers last month – scored in a 3-1 victory for Peter Beardsley’s side.
The second-year scholar Uhopes to earn a professional deal at St James’s Park.
Speaking about North Shields-born Roberts, United manager Alan Pardew said: “I do like him.
“He has tremendous technique and ability – he’s knocking on the door.”
Reserve-team coach Beardsley has high hopes for the 17-year-old, who could now earn a call-up for England’s Under-18s next year.
Roberts impressed against Blackburn at the Leigh Sports Village. The result took United, unbeaten in five games in all competitions, to the top of Under-21 Premier League Division Two.
