Rob Elliot has warned Premier League teams that Newcastle United want to make a big statement to sides coming to St James’s Park.
The goalkeeper was speaking in the aftermath of the Magpies’ thrilling 2-0 win over Liverpool yesterday.
Newcastle’s worth ethic was incredible, outrunning a vibrant Liverpool side who had come into the game on the back of a 6-1 midweek victory at Southampton in the Capital One Cup.
But the Reds were kept at bay by determined defending as Newcastle’s players showed a commitment and desire that has been sadly lacking in recent weeks.
Goalkeeper Rob Elliot had little to do, with an 89th-minute header by Dejan Lovren the only effort Liverpool had on target.
And the shot-stopper says the team have no laid down a marker about how they need to play in future.
“It was magnificent (defending) from front to back,” Elliot said.
“There’s been two poor performances recently but before that we’ve been doing well and building so we need to get back to that.
“I thought we were excellent. We just wanted to show the character we’ve got and the quality we’ve got.
“When you’ve got Gini up there and Moussa, it’s two good wingers and then the front two, Papiss and Siem, and players to bring on, we’ve got a threat.
“We just need to make sure we stay in the game and work hard as a team and then we’ll get the goals and get the chances.
“We’ve had a couple of false starts and then gone back to a couple of bad performances so we need to make sure this is where we kick on and this is who we are.
“We need to make a statement that this is how it’s going to be every time you come to St James’s, this is who we are and how we are going to perform every week.”
