Newcastle United have been linked with a January move for Italy international goalkeeper Salvatore Sirigu.
AS Monaco and Premier League rivals Aston Villa are also believed to be in the hunt to sign the out-of-favour Paris Saint-Germain shot stopper in next month’s transfer window.
The 28-year-old, who has 15 international caps for his country, has kept two clean sheets in the two appearances he has made all season for the defending Ligue 1 champions.
No 1 keeper Tim Krul is out injured for the rest of the season but Rob Elliot has impressed in goal since being handed his chance.
Meanwhile, Newcastle United are not believed to be interested in signing Joel Matip in the January transfer window.
The Schalke defender could still be heading to the North East though, with Matip the latest player to be linked with a move to the Stadium of Light after Sunderland have watched the Cameroon international on several occasions.
Matip is approaching the final six months of his contract at Schalke and would fit with Sunderland's search for cost-effective recruits in the New Year.
The 24-year-old is far from the only centre-half on Sunderland's hit-list though, with West Ham's James Collins and Lorient's Lamine Kone also on Allardyce's radar
