Alan Shearer scored five against a hapless Wednesday.

It was one of Alan Shearer’s greatest moments in a black and white shirt as the Newcastle hero claimed five goals in the 8-0 mauling of Sheffield Wednesday 17 years ago.

And the game on September 19, 1999 has now been named by the Daily Mail as the 27th best Premier League clash in history.

It was on that day that United, under the influence of new boss Bobby Robson, destroyed the Owls in a ruthless display at St James's Park.

Both sides were struggling, both on one point after seven matches – but it was Newcastle who cruised to a thumping victory, Alan Shearer scoring five times against the hapless Wednesday.

Aaron Hughes, Kieron Dyer and Gary Speed were also on target in what was the outright second biggest Premier League win of all-time.
