Daryl Janmaat was named the North East Football Writers’ Association’s player of the year on Sunday.
The Newcastle United defender beat Middlesbrough pair George Friend and Grant Leadbitter to the award.
Janmaat was honoured at the FWA’s annual dinner at Ramside Hall, Durham, on Sunday night.
Steve McClaren’s side, however, had been beaten 5-1 at Crystal Palace the previous day.
And Janmaat, feeling mixed emotions, made an impromptu speech to fans attending the dinner.
He said: “It is a strange situation for me to be standing here.
“I am proud to win this prize, but I am not proud of the poor results of Newcastle in 2015.
“Personally, I would like to say a big thank you to the Newcastle supporters for their absolute support this year – they deserve much more than we gave them.
“Myself, my team-mates and the staff will do everything we can in 2016 to make it a successful year.”
United forward Ayoze Perez was named the North East young player of the year.
