Newcastle United legends Peter Beardsley, John Beresford and Rob Lee took on three Super League stars in a rugby challenge before the Magic Weekend at St James’s Park.
On the banks of the River Tyne, the trio aimed to hit five giant inflatable rugby ball targets against Jon Wilkin (St Helens), Marc Sneyd (Hull FC), and Jack Owens (Widnes Vikings) in an effort to raise money for charity and promote the Magic Weekend making its first ever visit to the North East.
After a tough start, Wilkin hit the target to give the Super League stars an early lead. Beresford managed to pull a point back for the legends before Sneyd put the stars back ahead.
With England legend Beardsley struggling to hit the target, it was left to Lee and Beresford to give the legends a 3-2 lead in the final round.
But the stars showed their class with their final shots as Wilkin and Owens hit the target to take the title with a 4-3 victory.
The challenge raised £1,750 for the NSPCC, with £250 being offered for every target hit.
