The relegated club has reportedly had a loan bid rejected by Rafa Benitez, who wants to sign striker Salomon Rondon in the transfer window.

West Brom, it's claimed, floated the idea of a swap deal for Rondon, who has a £16.5million release clause in his contract at The Hawthorns.

United manager Benitez, however, is unwilling to sell or loan Gayle.

Benitez, set to sell Aleksandar Mitrovic to Fulham for £20million, wants to add to his striking options this summer.

So what does 27-year-old Gayle, signed from Crystal Palace two years ago, have to say about his Newcastle future?

Speaking after last week's 2-0 win over St Patrick's Athletic, Gayle said: “I’m loving it here. My family’s all set. For the time being, if the gaffer’s happy with me, I’m happy at to stay.”

Gayle, also a target for Stoke City and Fulham, wants to better last season's six-goal tally.

“Of course, we want to improve the team, and I understand that we’re going to bring in other players to improve the team,” said Gayle.

“It’s all part of football. It happens, and you have to prove to the gaffer that you’re the right person to start.”
