Who is reported Newcastle target Daniel Wass? Five things about the Evian player

NEWCASTLE United were today linked with a Deadline Day swoop for Evian’s Daniel Wass.

But who is the 25-year-old? Here are five things about Wass.

1. Versatility

Wass can play at right-back, left-back or on the right of midfield, similarly to the man he could replace at St James’s Park, Davide Santon.

With Santon set to rejoin Inter Milan on loan, it frees up a space in John Carver’s squad, and the versatility of Wass might make him an attractive option.

2. Goal threat

Although Wass is often described as a defender, most of his time this season has been spent in more attacking areas.

He has made 13 appearances on the right flank this season and seven as an attacking midfielder, and he has chipped in with eight goals in 21 games.

Wass has scored 33 per cent of Evian’s goals this season, with the French team battling to avoid relegation from Ligue 1.

3. Benfica frustration

Wass joined Benfica from Brondby in 2011, but did not play a single game for the Portuguese giants.

After signing a five-year deal, he was loaned out to Evian just two months later.

That move was then made permanent after a year spent in France.

4. Brondby beginnings

Wass started his senior career in his native Denmark with Brondby.

He broke into the team as an 18-year-old, while it was in the closing stages of his time at Brondby that his adeptness at playing in a more forward role became clear.

5. International star

Wass made his debut for Denmark against England in 2011, and has made 11 appearances so far for the senior team.

He has been linked with the likes of Chelsea and Liverpool in recent months.

Speaking in October, Wass said: “My head is still in Evian but if you offer me a departure in January, I will not say no.

“I want to progress and prove my abilities at a higher level.

“But a club has to be interested to meet the requirements that Evian have.”
