Newcastle United and Sunderland will NOT face each other in the group stage of the Checkatrade Trophy.
The draw for Round One of the competition will take place on July 18.
Sunderland are one of 48 EFL clubs that will take part in the Checkatrade Trophy along with 12 invited teams, including Newcastle.
The League One club are in a pre-determined group with Carlisle United and Morecambe.
However, the EFL today revealed that United will not be drawn with the club in Group A.
A statement read: "Southampton Under-21s will be prevented from being drawn with Portsmouth and Newcastle Under-21s will avoid Sunderland in Round One, as the EFL has committed to work in conjunction with the Police to avoid high-profile clashes in the Group Stages."
The two clubs could meet later in the competition if they both progress out of their groups.
Newcastle didn't make it out of their group last season.
Lincoln City won the competition in 2017-18.
