Hebburn Town beat Knaresborough Town 4-1 in the FA Vase on Saturday to progress to the second qualifying round.

After a mixed start to the season, manager Scott Oliver had called on his players to step up and perform.

And he got a response out of the Hornets, with skipper Channon North in particular impressive.

Hebburn started brightly and were reward with an early goal when big striker North rose high to head home from a James Talbot cross.

North also hit the post in the first half as Hebburn pressed for a second goal.

However, they had to wait until the second period when Glen Hargrave headed in from close range from a corner.

North scored again with a tap in at the back post to almost put Hebburn out of side against their Northern Counties East League opponents.

However, they were given a scare when Knaresborough pulled a goal back after a ball over the top.

Captain North was to have the final say, however, as he completed his hat-trick with an impressive bicycle kick after more good work from Talbot.

Injuries to Alan Pegram and Craig Malley were the only bad points from a good day’s work for manager Oliver.

In the Northern League, Jarrow Roofing hit Newton Aycliffe for six as the goals flowed from man of the match Lewis Teasdale (4), Alex White and John Campbell (pen).

Jordan Laidler and Stuart Banks scored within a minute to give Aycliffe a 2-1 lead at one stage.

Roofing are now 11th in the Division One table.
