Jarrow Roofing fell to their third consecutive defeat as Newcastle Benfield triumphed 3-1 in the Northern League Division One.

The opening half hour was fairly evenly matched, with neither side able to put the ball into the back of the net, a reflection of the league table – Roofing went into the game a place higher than the visitors on goal difference.

The visitors struck first. Roofers failed to clear their lines from each, and the ball fell nicely to ex-Necwastle United youngsters Paul Brayson who finished low into the bottom right hand corner of Dan Regan’s net.

Benfield doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time when a quick counter-attack saw Brayson see his shot rocket back off the crossbar and bounce on the goal-line, allowing Dean Walker to convert the rebound.

For Roofing, things were to get worse before they could get any better, as a low Benfield cross from the right exposed the home side’s defensive vulnerabilities, and Brayson converted to put the visitors three goals up on 56 minutes.

Richie McLoughlin’s side grabbed a consolation on 81 minutes, when a cross from the right found Michael Riley at the back post and his header prevented his former club keeping a clean sheet.

Meanwhile, Roofing have announced they are to part company with former captain Dan Kirkup.
