Jarrow Roofing go into their first Ebac Northern League Division 1 home game of the season against Sunderland RCA tomorrow with manager Richie McLoughlin calling for his players to respond in the same manner as last weekend.
McLoughlin had blasted his team following their opening pair of performances - a draw at Norton & Stockton Ancients and a defeat at Bishop Auckland - yet the 2-1 win at Penrith was comprehensive, even if the scoreline hints at a tighter game.
We need to see more of the same against RCA as the lads showed at PenrithRichie McLoughlin
“We need to see more of the same against RCA as the lads displayed last Saturday at Penrith,” McLoughlin said.
“We showed that we wanted to win the game and we had belief in our own ability.”
McLoughlin has also set his expectation that the team move up through the gears towards their top form, though he acknowledges that it will take a few games to get there.
“It will take a few games under our belts to get towards top form but I’m expecting to see continued improvement as we move towards that.”
Last season, the Roofers completed the double over RCA, winning 2-1 at home last September and then 4-1 on Wearside in February.
However, with an experienced forward line of former professionals Colin Larkin and Liam Hatch, the Roofers will need to be on guard and cut out the poor defending that caused a number of soft goals to be conceded in their three games played so far.
RCA followed up a pair of opening league defeats with a creditable 4-4 draw at home to Guisborough in the FA Cup last Saturday before bowing out in midweek in the replay.
Meanwhile, Roofing learned the identity of their next opponents in the FA Cup when Bishop Auckland defeated Shildon in a replay.
The Roofers will now travel to County Durham next Saturday, August 29 as South Tyneside’s only representatives in the famous competition.
The South Tynesiders need to be hitting top form to progress in the FA Cup, and to do that, the Roofers know they need to start getting three points on the board starting against RCA.
Dan Kirkup is expected to be fit for Roofing, with only Kieran Wrightson a doubt.
Kick-off at the Boldon CA Sports Ground, which is just off Cotswold Lane, in Boldon Colliery, is at 3pm.
