Jarrow Roofing have re-signed John Campbell ahead of their Northern League Division One campaign.

Campbell first signed for the Roofers last summer, scoring 24 goals in 19 games including five – and a 60-yard wonder strike – against Consett, before being snapped up by League Two side Oxford United in November.

The forward was sent on loan to Torquay United, making seven appearances for the Gulls and scoring once, before Oxford announced they wouldn’t be retaining the player, opening the door for a return to the Boldon CA Sports Ground.

Roofing manager Richie McLoughlin is pleased to have got his man.

“He’s a big goalscorer, able to score goals when necessary and create something from nothing,” the Roofing supremo said.

“We were flying last season until John left us in November – if he’d stayed we may have been challenging for the league title and I definitely believe we can do that now.”

Last season saw Lewy Teasdale finish as the club’s top scorer, one ahead of Campbell, while the Roofers also secured the return of Northern League legend Paul Chow, and McLoughlin believes Campbell leaves the side with a perfect strikeforce.

“Paul has been scoring goals in this division for years, and Lewy has come through and scored plenty for us,” he added.

“Add John to that and we’ve got a really good selection of players there, all of them goalscorers who could put us in contention for the title.”

McLoughlin’s intentions were echoed by Campbell.

“I want to challenge for the title and hopefully improve upon last season’s FA Cup and FA Vase performances,” he said.

“The signings we have made are great addition to help with achieving those aims.”

The Roofers have brought in FA Vase-winning midfielder Kieran Wrightson from North Shields, winger Michael Riley from Newcastle Benfield and the versatile Ian Balmain who has recovered from long-term injury after a spell at Benfield.

Roofing play their first pre-season friendly on Tuesday night at Wearside League side Gateshead Leam Rangers with all four new faces expected to appear alongside the bulk of last season’s squad who helped the Roofers to seventh.
