John Campbell sees Oxford United transfer collapse – and returns to Jarrow Roofing

RETURN ... John Campbell.
RETURN ... John Campbell.

STRIKER John Campbell is set to return to Jarrow Roofing this weekend – after his dream move to Oxford United fell through.

Campbell moved to the League Two side in November on loan after impressing on a short trial.

The deal saw Oxford agree to take the player until the transfer window opened, when they would sign him for a pre-arranged fee.

However, the Gazette understands the U’s have since tried to negotiate a deal for the player to stay with them until the end of the season – either on loan or for a fee that would only be paid if he made 10 appearances.

The latter could have seen Roofing effectively lose the player for nothing, as he wasn’t guaranteed to make that many appearances, having only featured three times for the first team since his move, scoring once.

And with Oxford refusing to pay the previously agreed fee, Campbell will return to Roofing – and could even feature for them in their Northern League Division One game against North Shields.

Roofing boss Richie McLoughlin said: “After pushing John and getting media exposure for him, it was no surprise that a professional club came in for him.

“Oxford made an offer, which we accepted, and that was for a loan deal until the conclusion of the transfer window which would have enabled them to sign John on a permanent basis.

“Because Oxford wanted John immediately, we were happy to send him on loan until the deal could be made permanent and we fully expected that to happen.

“As it stands now, Oxford have indicated they don’t want to proceed with the agreed terms and so John will return to Jarrow Roofing.

“While everyone at the club is bitterly disappointed that the deal will not progress, we all firmly believe in John’s undoubted ability and fully expect him to progress into professional football after a short spell back with us.”

Ex-Newcastle United youngster Campbell was supposed to stay with Oxford until the end of the month, and trained with their first team today, but the Gazette understands he may be allowed to miss the weekend’s game against Stevenage and instead line-up for Roofing at title-chasers North Shields.

Roofing, however, will be without key midfielder Shaun Vipond who has a wrist injury.
