Julio Arca’s South Shields debut ended in a draw on a difficult day for non-league football in South Tyneside.
Arca played the full 90 minutes in a 1-1 draw against strugglers Stokesley in the Northern League Division Two.
Former Sunderland star Arca was even credited with the Shields goal though he later claimed the opener wasn’t his after a scramble.
He said: “It wasn’t my goal. I kicked the ball but I don’t know what the guy did.
“I could claim it, but honestly it wasn’t mine, but if they want to give it to me – happy days.”
In front of a crowd of more than 700, Arca played on the left side of midfield but it was a disappointing result for the promotion-chasing side.
It was also a disappointing day for Jarrow Roofing as they crashed out of the FA Cup after a 4-3 thriller against Congleton Town.
It had looked good for Roofing when they led 2-0 after just six minutes through John Campbell and Paul Chow but they were 3-2 down by half-time and Congleton added a fourth. Campbell pulled back a consolation but it wasn’t enough.
And to cap a bad day for the borough’s Northern League sides, Hebburn Town lost 5-1 against Easington in Division Two.
