South Shields were agonisingly knocked out of the FA Vase last night after Morpeth Town triumphed on penalties following a 3-3 draw.
A pulsating game at Consett’s Belle View was dominated for large parts by Shields, who fought back from a goal behind with an equaliser from David Foley.
They were unable to convert one of their numerous clear-cut chances before the 90 minutes were up, but went ahead in extra-time when former Sunderland and Middlesbrough midfielder Julio Arca found a way to goal.
Morpeth showed resilience to fight back themselves, though, and two goals in five minutes looked set to send them through to round four.
However, Shields rose to the challenge again, with a volley from Warren Byrne with two minutes remaining forcing a penalty shoot-out.
The shoot-out ebbed and flowed, with the Mariners missing a spot-kick to win it before eventually succumbing to a 10-9 loss.
