Patrick Vieira is the new favourite to be Newcastle United’s next head coach.
The club want Vieira, in charge of Manchester City’s elite development squad, to be Alan Pardew’s permanent successor at St James’s Park.
Vieira is on a rolling contract at the Etihad Stadium.
And the 38-year-old former France international– who is being groomed for the City manager’s job – is understood to be interested in the Newcastle post.
World Cup winner Vieira – who had a hugely-successful nine-year spell as a player at Arsenal – is now the odds-on favourite for the job with most bookmakers.
Steve McClaren, sacked by Derby County last week, had been the previous favourite.
