Pensioner, 84, targeted in attempted robbery at South Shields cash point

A would-be thief tried to take cash from a pensioner as she withdrew money at an ATM.

Northumbria Police are appealing for information after the 84-year-old woman was subjected to the ordeal in South Shields.

The incident happened on Saturday at 3.40pm as the woman was using the cash machine at HSBC in Fowler Street.

The offender attempted to take the money as it came out of the cashpoint.

A witness chased the offender, who made off without the cash.

The woman was not injured in the incident but was left shaken.

Officers are carrying out inquiries and are appealing for witnesses.

Police have released an image of a man in the area at the time who officers are keen to speak to, as he may be able to help with information.
