DUTCH OF CLASS ... Siem de Jong.

SIEM de Jong played 90 minutes for Newcastle United’s Under-21s this afternoon – but he couldn’t inspire the club to a win.

Head coach John Carver was among the spectators at Derby County’s Oakwood training ground for the Under-21 Premier League match between the two sides.

The home side ran out 4-0 winners thanks to goals from Kwame Thomas, Mason Bennett, Shaquille McDonald and Ivan Calero.

De Jong – who had surgery after suffering a collapsed lung in February – made a goalscoring first-team comeback at the weekend.

The forward came off the bench in the 74th minute to score in Newcastle’s 3-2 Premier League defeat to Swansea City at St James’s Park.

And de Jong is expected to get a longer run-out against Leicester City at the King Power Stadium on Saturday, having topped up his fitness against Derby.

NEWCASTLE UNITED: Woolston, Sterry (Gilliead, 46), Laidler, Kemen, Newberry, Cameron, Ward (Longstaff, 85), Ferreyra (Heardman, 85), Armstrong, de Jong, Barlaser. Subs not used: Harker, Roberts.
