The on-loan defender is ineligible to play against Tottenham Hotspur, his parent club, at St James's Park tomorrow night.

Rose, frozen out at Tottenham by Jose Mourinho, has one year left on his contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, and he revealed earlier this month that he hopes to stay at Newcastle.

Speaking to the club’s matchday programme, the 30-year-old said: “For me, I’d love to play for Newcastle for longer than what’s on my contract.

"It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out that my days possibly are numbered at Spurs, and I’m playing for my future.

“There’s no bigger motivation for me. It’s probably been the first time in my career when I’ve been in this situation – never have I been down to less than one year on my contract, so it’s a new experience for me.”

However, there was no obligation to buy in the loan agreement between the two clubs, and Bruce, United’s head coach, was asked about Rose’s future ahead of the Tottenham game.

“We’ve got to have all these conversations,” said Bruce. “He’s Tottenham’s player, and in the next few weeks in particular, we’ll be looking, identifying and seeing where we are.

"We’re trying to put plans in place, and we’ll see what the situation is in the summer. He’s done very well for us – we’re pleased with him – and I’m sure there’ll be conversations to have."
