Sunderland thumped by Everton 6-2

Sunderland were thumped 6-2 away at Everton after a second-half defensive horror show.

Which, if any, of Sam Allardyce's side came out of the heavy defeat with credit?

Richard Mennear gives his player ratings here:

Sunderland: (5-3-2)

Costel Pantilimon: 4. Made some routine saves first half. Positioning questioned for Kone's goal. Never a good day when you concede six.

DeAndre Yedlin: 4 Broke with pace and purpose opening 20 minutes. Final ball lacking. And the wing backs went missing second half as Sunderland collapsed. Subbed.

Wes Brown: 2. Won his headers early on but allowed Kone too much space for second goal. Lukaku battered him second half.

Sebastian Coates: 2. Provided assist for Defoe's first-half goal. Scored an own goal and defence ripped to shreds second half, with Coates at the heart of it.

Billy Jones: 4. Started well enough at left centre-back but left exposed for opening goal in his new role. Poor second half, Sunderland comical at the back.

Patrick Van Aanholt: 4: Hit the post early on. Looked at home at left-wing back initially but didn't track run for Everton opener. Awful second half showing.

Lee Cattermole (C): 5 Frustrating afternoon for the stand-in captain. Did a lot of running backwards. Was then subbed off injured after 35 minutes.

Yann M'Vila: 5 Covered a lot of ground. Had his hands full with the Everton forwards. Too much for him to do, no help from defence.

Adam Johnson: 6. Hit the post with a low drive. Inventive passing at times and tracked ball to help out team.

Jermain Defoe: 6 Booked. Early promise faded as Everton scored two soft goals. But Defoe's class shone through with his 45th minute strike.

Steven Fletcher: 6. MOM. Had a penalty appeal turned down after ball hit Barry's hand. Kept grafting up front and making a nuisance of himself, scored again.

Jack Rodwell (for Cattermole, 38): 4. Slotted into central midfield against his former club before shunted to centre back after Everton had run riot. Very poor.

Seb Larsson (for Yedlin, 64): 6. Game was gone when he entered the action.

Duncan Watmore (for Fletcher, 75): 6. Full of running but game was well gone. Remained positive though.
