LOAN SPELL ... Fabio Borini in actiion for Sunderland last season

GUS POYET has indicated that he will avoid attempting to rekindle Sunderland’s courtship of Fabio Borini.

The Gazette revealed yesterday how Sunderland have ruled out making a January bid for last season’s loanee Borini after their summer-long chase to re-sign the Italian ended in failure.

Despite Sunderland agreeing a £14million fee with Liverpool, Borini priced himself out of a Stadium of Light return with his wage demands and the Black Cats have no intention of becoming embroiled in another saga involving the 23-year-old.

Sunderland boss Poyet has hinted that is indeed the case after being asked whether he would speak with Borini about returning to the Stadium of Light following today’s clash at Anfield.

“I don’t think so,” said Poyet.

“I think things are clear (regarding Sunderland’s transfers).

“I don’t know if things are too early (before the transfer window) but at the moment, everything is calm and there are not too many rumours or too much information coming out.”

He added: “I’m looking forward to seeing Fabio.

“I don’t like to talk to players I know before the game, so they don’t get in trouble or feel like you’re trying to get something.

“But afterwards I like to talk to them about everything – life, how they’re enjoying their football.”

Borini hasn’t even been on the bench for Liverpool’s last two games and has been restricted to just three starts since returning to Anfield in the summer.

However, Poyet is still wary of Borini being involved today and haunting Sunderland.

“I always think that strikers always score against the teams they’ve played for before,” added the head coach.

“I would prefer Fabio not to play.

“I would like for him to be talking to Steven Gerrard (in the stands) so it means he’s not playing either!

“As a fan, I want the best players to play. But if for any reason against you one of the top players is rested, you need to take advantage of that because it doesn’t happen very often.”
