On-loan Spurs full-back DeAndre Yedlin says Sunderland’s former American contingent urged him to move to the Stadium of Light.

Yedlin became Sunderland’s eighth signing of the summer today when he agreed a season-long loan switch to join the Black Cats after making just one Premier League appearance for Spurs.

The 22-year-old is currently with the American squad on the other side of the Atlantic for games against Peru and Brazil, and will not link up with his new team-mates until next week.

But Yedlin is excited about the prospect of his move to Wearside after speaking with fellow Americans, and Sunderland old boys Jozy Altidore and Claudio Reyna.

Yedlin said: “I’m delighted to be given the opportunity to play for a club with such great history.

“I’ve heard fantastic things about Sunderland and the supporters from Claudio Reyna and Jozy Altidore.

“Claudio speaks very highly of Dick Advocaat from his time at Rangers.”

However, Yedlin will not be able to make his Sunderland debut against parent club Spurs, when the Black Cats return to Premier League action a week on Sunday.
