'Smart move!': Sunderland fans react to defender's contract decision
Sunderland defender Reece James has departed the club – and fans have been quick to react.
The left-back has joined League One rivals Doncaster Rovers on a two-year deal, despite only recently triggering a one-year extension to his contract at the Stadium of Light.
Rovers will pay an undisclosed fee for the former Manchester United man, whose arrival was announced on Wednesday afternoon.
And while the decision to sign a contract and swiftly depart has left some fans surprised, others believe it has proven to be a clever move from the club and player.
Here’s how fans reacted to the move on social media:
On Twitter, @RokerReport said: “Smart move by Reece James. HE took up the option to extend - insurance in case nothing better came along. Has been told he'll be second choice and can't blame him for moving on and wanting first team footy.”
@KennaSAFC added: “Good, very poor player who's no better than hume and not a patch on oveido!”
@SunderLAD posted: “A step in the wrong direction.”
@Lew_SAFC commented: “Be interesting, especially if Oviedo goes to Brugge. Happy for Hume to develop as our starting LB, would need a backup for sure”
@Ridderz86 tweeted: “Like losing your appendix. Not missed at all”
Meanwhile on Facebook, Cass Marrineur asked: “so he would rather play for donny than us. What does that tell you?”
Jason Black added: “It’s not looking good”
Mark Atkinson commented: “Whats going on over there”
