Bristol Live claim that the Gas are on the verge of clinching the signing of the former Peterborough United defender, who was not offered a new contract by manager Phil Parkinson this summer.

Baldwin, who spent most of the 2019/20 season on loan at League Two side Salford City, will become a free agent when his contract expires on June 30.

But he won’t have to wait long to team-up with a new side, with Bristol Rovers boss Ben Garner having made the 26-year-old a top summer target.

Having joined the Black Cats in 2018 as one of Jack Ross’ first signings, Baldwin was a key member of the Sunderland squad who embarked on their first season in the third tier.

But he struggled to bounce back from a disappointing performance in the 5-4 defeat to Coventry City during the promotion run-in and, despite impressing against Premier League Burnley in the Carabao Cup earlier this season, was allowed to join Salford on loan.

While there, Baldwin suffered an injury which sidelined him for a number of months before his return coincided with a switch in position to central midfielder.

The Gas, however, are understood to have signed the ex-Hartlepool man as a defensive option – with former Gillingham captain Max Ehmer also expected to put pen to paper at the Memorial Stadium in the coming days.
