“That's good and I'm very happy that there's a buzz,” Johnson said.

“The fans have got to be allowed to do whatever they want, the fans are the club.

“If they want to get carried away with the euphoria of a result or a run, then brilliant. If it's a bit more pessimistic, that's OK too.

“For me, it's so simple in that it's about the process.

“I can't guarantee a scoreline but what I should be able to guarantee is a consistency in the philosophy.

“I was so enthused with the way the players took in the detail and were able to implement it so quickly in what was a difficult game at this level.

“That's very encouraging moving forward but we've got to keep chipping away at that.

“We've just to keep driving away at the performances, making sure the players who didn't start understand why it was a good performance and then when they start speaking the same language as you, you know you’re making progress.”

The win at Lincoln was crucial for Johnson as he tries to overhaul the club’s playing philosophy.

He hopes the performance gave a fans an insight into what he is trying to achieve.

“We have to stick to what we're trying to do and believe in it,” he said.

“What we want is an alignment from everywhere. From playing staff to coaching staff, to the board, to the fanbase to the media.

“So that everybody starts to recognise the identity, and when we get fans back in they can actually play up to that identity.

“At a club like this that should then become a really powerful beast.

“Hopefully fans who watched the game on Saturday will have enjoyed it and seen these shoots of encouragement.”
