The striker netted a penalty before sending a thumping header past Lee Burge to seal victory against the Black Cats - who he believes are ‘the best League One team there is’.

And with the former Gateshead striker a proud fans of the Magpies, it was no surprise that he was greeted with a number of congratulatory texts following his two-goal haul.

“It was obviously a good feeling,” said Novak, speaking to Scunthorpe’s official website.

“I didn’t really think about it much during the game. It was after when I got back to the dressing room and looked at my phone and I had about 40 messages off different people.

“It was good to get the win. The gaffer spoke about wanting to get through before the game and, especially after the disappointing display against Crawley, we needed to put things right and I think we did.

“From the start, we controlled the game and on paper that’s probably the best League One team there is.”

Meanwhile, one of Sunderland’s promotion rivals could see their squad depleted in January - with Ivan Toney heavily linked with an exit from Peterborough United.

Reports earlier this week suggested that the Posh had slapped a £13million price tag on the striker’s head, having fended off interest in his services over the summer.

But fresh claims suggest that Premier League side Bournemiuth are ready to test Peterborough’s resolve with a £9million bid in January.

And such a move could also benefit Newcastle United, who are understood to have a ‘hefty’ sell-on clause in their favour after selling the striker to the Posh.

Toney, though, appears to have no desire to force through a move.

Speaking to the Athletic, he said: “Top-scorer in England at the moment is not bad but we’re only two months into the season.

“Now I’ve kicked on again and I’m determined to prove myself. I feel respected here.”
