Napoli have been left furious with former Sunderland target Jonathan de Guzman after his failure to leave the club before the transfer deadline, according to reports in Italy.

Sunderland spent several weeks chasing de Guzman last month after agreeing a season-long loan switch, with a view to a permanent deal, with Napoli.

The player evaluated the options, but did not consider them appropriate to accept and so remained in Naples

But after a fortnight of stalling, de Guzman eventually rejected Sunderland’s advances, with even Napoli’s attempts to resurrect a move to the Stadium of Light coming to nought when the Black Cats abandoned their interest in the ex-Swansea man and instead moved for Ola Toivonen.

That was one of several potential exit routes which reached a dead-end for de Guzman, who was also a target for Marseille, while a deadline day switch to Bournemouth fell through.

Napoli have been left frustrated by de Guzman’s reluctance to leave the club and reports in Italy have indicated that he will not be picked by the Serie A outfit until they attempt to move him on again in the January window.

De Guzman’s agent, Fabio Parisi, said: “During the transfer window, there emerged several opportunities in the market for de Guzman.

“The player evaluated the options, but did not consider them appropriate to accept and so remained in Naples.”

While de Guzman hesitated over the chance to join Sunderland, Toivonen proved to be a stark contrast after the Swedish international jumped at the offer of a season-long loan switch to Wearside.

Toivonen was the solution to Advocaat’s summer-long search for a new attacking midfielder, with the Sunderland head coach not impressed by de Guzman’s stalling tactics.

Advocaat said last month: “He didn’t want to come, let’s be clear.

“I think if a player doesn’t want to come, then stay away.”
