Nigel Pearson is unlikely to be named as new Sunderland manager, despite reports today suggesting the club have opened talks with him over the vacant head coach position.

The former Leicester City boss is out of work after parting company with the Foxes at the end of the season.

He was quickly installed as one of the favourites for the Black Cats post after Dick Advocaat’s resignation on Sunday.

And a report today claimed the club have contacted Pearson about the job.

However, the Gazette understands that the chances of Pearson getting the job are remote, although he remains on a list of candidates being compiled by the club.

Sunderland are sounding out other options though they could still turn to Pearson if those alternatives don’t impress.

Pearson guided Leicester to safety last season with a remarkable run of results in the latter stages of the campaign, but was involved in a number of controversial incidents and was replaced by Claudio Ranieri in the summer.
