'No news': Sunderland target speaks out on his future as he becomes a free agent

The Australian international made five appearances for the Black Cats during a brief loan spell before the League One season was curtailed, and caught the eye in the centre of Phil Parkinson’s new-look back three before injury thwarted his progress.

Parkinson is keen to bring the 27-year-old back to the Stadium of Light this summer, with the centre back a free agent after leaving former club Bristol City.

And with the Sunderland boss having claimed he was ‘close’ to agreeing a deal with an unnamed target during an interview with BBC Radio Newcastle last week, there was an expectation among the fanbase that the player in question could be Wright.

But the man himself was coy when quizzed on his future plans by BBC Bristol.

“No news from myself at the moment,” he admitted.

“I’m a free agent, which is the first time for me in my football career over in England. It feels a bit weird and I’m definitely missing that hunger and that winning feeling you get day in, day out at training and in games.

“I’m hoping something is sorted fairly soon, but as of now there is nothing sorted.

“But I’m looking forward to see what lies ahead.”

Wright is one of Parkinson’s main targets this summer as he looks to reshape his defence – with Jordan Willis the only natural centre back currently under contract for next season.
