Watmore came off the bench during Friday’s goalless draw with Doncaster at the Stadium of Light but hasn’t started a match since the meeting with Bolton on Boxing Day.

Parkinson has named a consistent side in recent weeks but insists there is competition for places within the squad.

“There are players who haven't figured much recently and we have picked more or less a consistent side which is quite unusual,” said the Sunderland boss.

“One or two like Duncan, who unfortunately picked up an injury when he came on, it’s nothing serious but Wednesday will probably come too soon for him.

“There are players who are waiting for the opportunity and are eager to stake their claim."

Parkinson also confirmed striker Will Grigg will miss the Tranmere game through illness.
