SUNDERLAND reporter Chris Young gives his verdict after the Black Cats’ drab stalemate against fellow strugglers West Brom.

Pantilimon 6 - A spectator for huge portions of the game, with West Brom showing no attacking ambition. Gathered every cross cleanly.

Vergini 5 - Several lapses in possession when he came forward, but ensured Craig Gardner was subdued on his return to the Stadium of Light.

O’SHEA 7 - Handled the in-form Brown Ideye with ease and brought the ball out of defence confidently when Sunderland were camped in the Baggies half.

Brown 7 - Showed his experience in keeping Saido Berahino under-wraps, when the Baggies striker would have been desperate to impress the watching Roy Hodgson.

Reveillere 6 - Back in the side and back into the groove as Sunderland’s ever-reliable full-back.

Cattermole 7 - Was short on match fitness after nearly two months out, but immediately showed what Sunderland have been missing, with that extra bite in midfield, plus produced an excellent pass that could have seen Joleon Lescott dismissed.

Larsson 7 - Covered acres of ground, spread the play with several eye-catching crossfield passes and drew the most testing save out of Ben Foster on the stroke of half-time.

Alvarez 5 - Far too predictable in constantly cutting inside. Should have taken on makeshift left-back Chris Brunt much more frequently, albeit he produced the cross for Adam Johnson’s ‘goal’ just before half-time. (Wickham 6 - Saw a header saved by Foster from a corner).

Johnson 6 - Looked the likeliest Sunderland player to create something and saw a perfectly legitimate goal ruled out.

Graham 7 - Worked hard, made several good runs down the channels and could have contributed to Lescott’s early dismissal, albeit there was minimal contact. (Fletcher 5 - Couldn’t make an impact).

Defoe 6 - Whistled a cross-come-shot across the face in the first half, but didn’t look 100 per cent fit, albeit West Brom defended well by immediately closing the striker down in the vicinity of the penalty area.

WEST BROM: Foster 7, Dawson 7, McAuley 7, Lescott 7, Brunt 7, Morrison 5 (Baird 6), Fletcher 6, Yacob 7, Gardner 5, Ideye 5, Berahino 5
