GUS POYET says his instincts told him to pen an open letter to Sunderland supporters this week.
Sunderland head coach Poyet took the unusual step of addressing fans directly this week in a bid to bring some calm to Wearside after two damaging results against QPR and Bradford.
Poyet had received flak from the away end during last Sunday’s FA Cup upset at Valley Parade, and that criticism has continued during the week.
But Poyet hopes that he has defused the situation with yesterday’s letter, where he accepted responsibility for Sunderland’s recent troubles and pleaded for unity with the team and supporters.
Poyet said today: “The letter was an instinct, which is something that I always follow and has helped me a lot during my career.
“I felt that it was needed. Nothing else.
“For that to go out, it needs to be accepted by the club and chairman.
“But I just thought it was the right thing.
“I didn’t have any discussion with anyone.
“There was just too much negativity and I thought it would be good for the fans to read something from me.”
