Sam Allardyce is hoping for a transfer breakthrough in the next ‘week to 10 days’.

The Sunderland boss is looking to pep up his squad in the January transfer window, with a centre-half and striker high on his wish list.

The Black Cats have been linked with Bayern Munich defender Jan Kirchoff and Italian striker Ciro Immobile over the last few days, along with a host of other players as they look to strengthen their ranks ahead of a relegation scrap in the second half of the season.

“We have been very active inthe last three weeks laying the foundations,” said Allardyce on talkSPORT.

“New players can help lift the spirits of everyone - hopefully in the next week to ten days.”

Allardyce is very keen to bolster the Cats defence, with Jermain Defoe in particular proving a threat at the other end of the pitch.

“If I can still sort out the back, then we have goals in us,” he said.

“We’ve cured it at times, but if we can get it sorted, we have a goalscorer in Jermain who can turn games.

“Jermain popped up to get the goals for us against Aston Villa after they equalised. I think that’s the way forward.”
