Sunderland and Inter Milan misfit could find a way out

Argentine side San Lorenzo expect to learn today if they have made a breakthrough in their bid to end the uncertainty over Ricky Alvarez’s future.

Sunderland have been involved in a summer-long dispute with Inter Milan over Alvarez after failing to activate the £8million permanent clause in the midfielder’s season-long loan deal at the Stadium of Light.

He is a player that is to our liking and we are very optimistic.

The Black Cats argue that Inter had breached the loan contract by stalling over a decision on knee surgery for Alvarez, with FIFA called in to decide on the transfer.

But while neither Sunderland or Inter appear to want Alvarez, there has been interest in the 27-year-old from his homeland, where River Plate and particularly San Lorenzo have been tracking his situation.

San Lorenzo have been hoping to sign Alvarez on a Bosman deal and have reportedly agreed provisional terms over a contract after the Argentine international appealed to FIFA to be made a free agent.

They expect to learn today whether FIFA will agree to that proposal, with the Argentine transfer window closing on Friday.

San Lorenzo president Matias Lammens told the Argentine press: “We agreed that when his legal status is resolved we will sit down to define contract terms.

“He is a player that is to our liking and we are very optimistic.”

Inter are not going to agree to any settlement that leaves them out of pocket though after submitting their annual Financial Fair Play accounts based on the sale of Alvarez.

Equally, Sunderland who are not thought to have been told of any resolution yet from FIFA over Alvarez, will hope to avoid any financial punishment over the loan deal.

The uncertainty over the Alvarez situation was NOT a factor on Sunderland’s spending during the summer.

But if Sunderland are forced to sign him, it would be a big outlay on a player who only fleetingly produced moments of quality during his injury-hit campaign at the Stadium of Light and remains in rehabilitation from his knee injury.
