Gooch missed the 3-0 win over AFC Wimbledon but head coach Lee Johnson said that he is so far asymptomatic.

No other positive results were returned at the club in the latest round of testing.

“Lynden was a positive test for COVID-19.

“It's obviously frustrating for us and him as he was completely asymptomatic.

“We're frustrated because he had done so well in the Port Vale game and he hasn't had the chance to really build up a head of steam since I came in.”

Sunderland had 14 positive tests in their playing squad after their first outbreak before Christmas, but the club and the EFL have since significantly strengthened their protocols.

The Black Cats are now being tested twice a week, with the EFL confident that the tightened regime will allow the season to continue to a conclusion.
