Ola Toivonen, Jeremain Lens and Adam Johnson all start for Sunderland in the Wear-Tyne derby.

Sam Allardyce made three changes to his starting XI for his opening home game in charge of the Black Cats, as he opted for an attack-minded line-up.

With Fabio Borini ruled out with an ankle problem, Lens - back after serving a one-match ban - came into the side, as did Toivonen and Johnson.

The latter pair were preferred to Seb Larsson and Jordi Gomez in midfield, as Allardyce set up in a 4-3-3 system.

Newcastle were unchanged.
