He will become the second Sunderland player to leave this window after Laurens De Bock’s loan spell from Leeds United was cut short, with the left-back keen to move back home to Belgium.

Sunderland are expected to be busy this month and news of McGeouch’s departure comes after a transfer meeting between Parkinson, owner Stewart Donald and the club’s recruitment team on Monday.

Sunderland are aiming to sign up to five new players this month.
