Sunderland today confirmed the capture of Ola Toivonen on a season-long loan from French club Rennes – and he could feature in tomorrow’s Premier League trip to Aston Villa.
The Swedish international attacking midfielder teams up again with Black Cats boss Dick Advocaat, having worked alongside him at PSV Eindhoven.
Advocaat enthused: “I worked with Ola at PSV so I know him well. He is a national team player with a lot of experience, an attacking midfielder who can score goals and is good in the air – he will bring something different to the team.”
Toivonen, 29, played for hometown club Degerfos IF before moving on to top Swedish clubs Gothenburg and Malmo, then PSV in Holland, where he won the Dutch Cup.
Toivonen, capped 43 times by Sweden, scoring nine times, signed for Rennes in January 2014 and has scored 14 goals in 46 league appearances.
He will link up with fellow Swede Seb Larsson in Sunderland’s midfield.
