Sunderland Ladies star Beth Mead has admitted she is ‘disappointed’ at being overlooked by England boss Mark Sampson.

Mead is the leading goalscorer in the top flight of the Women’s Super League this season, with 11 goals in 12 games.

Her form had prompted calls for her to be included in the England squad for their forthcoming Euro 2017 qualifier against Estonia.

But Sampson opted against calling up the 20-year-old striker, even when there was a withdrawal from his initial selection.

Mead admitted: “I was disappointed not getting picked but I’m sure Mark will pick me when he thinks I’m ready.

“All I can do is keep training and keep working hard and try my best to get myself in his eyeline.

“I respect Mark’s decision. He thinks he’s got the best mix. I wish him well and I wish I was there but maybe I’m not ready and maybe he thinks I’m a little too young or not experienced enough.

“I’m sure there are a number of factors. But I’ll just keep going and keep working hard.”
