SUNDERLAND Under-21s succumbed to a 4-2 defeat at Leicester City tonight.

A spirited late fightback was not enough for the Black Cats, as they were unable to recover from going 2-0 down at the King Power Stadium.

Leicester striker Simonas Stankevicius opened the scoring when he tapped in Jak McCourt’s free-kick from close range, with Duncan Watmore - replaced at half-time - going close to an equaliser a couple of times before the interval.

The Foxed doubled their advantage six minutes after the restart when Harry Panayiotou turned the ball past Sunderland keeper Jordan Pickford, back in red and white after his loan spell at Bradford.

Sunderland winger Rees Greenwood hit the bar with a left-footed strike before Tom Beadling converted a penalty with 15 minutes to go after Andrew Nelson had been brought down.

Jack Barmby immediately restored Leicester’s two-goal lead when he rounded Pickford, before striker Nelson set up a grand-stand finish when he netted Sunderland’s second with three minutes to go.

But as Sunderland pushed for an equaliser, Panayiotou sealed Leicester’s victory in the last minute.
