Sunderland to host Shrewsbury in EFL Cup second round, while Newcastle entertain Cheltenham

Sunderland and Newcastle United have both been drawn at home in the second round of the EFL Cup.

The Black Cats face a first ever cup clash with Shrewsbury Town, while the Mags entertain Cheltenham Town, who are enjoying life back in league football after a year in the National League.

Sunderland, who host Middlesbrough in the Premier League on Sunday, August 21, look certain to stage the Shrews on Wednesday, August 24, with the Newcastle tie the night before.

Middlesbrough are away to Fulham.

Bizarrely, Bristol City do not yet know their opponents. If Bristol Rovers win tomorrow’s final first round tie at Cardiff, they will head to Chelsea, giving City a tie at Scunthorpe. If Cardiff win, they will head to Scunthorpe as a seeded team and Bristol City visit Chelsea.
