Sunderland have warned fans to plan their journey to the home clash against Tottenham Hotspur carefully to avoid traffic chaos caused by the clash with the Great North Run.

The Black Cats take on Spurs in a 1.30pm kick off and with the Run also taking place on the same day, the region’s transport network is expected to be extremely busy.

Fans are advised to check for any road closures and to leave plenty of time to get to the Stadium of Light given the roads, Metro system, buses and trains will all be experiencing additional demand.

Turnstiles at the Stadium of Light will open from midday and the popular Fan Zone will open from 11am. The Fan Zone will also be open for an hour after the game.

The matchday ‘Park and Ride’ facility will be available from noon and operates from the Sunderland Enterprise Park just off the A1231.

Sunderland AFC’s head of safety, Paul Weir said: “Sunday will be a busy day for the region with two high profile sporting events taking place and fans attending the game should ensure that they take plan their journey very carefully to take into account the potential for delays.

“The approach roads to the stadium are likely to be very busy both before and after the game and supporters are asked to show patience and understanding when making their way to and from the match.”
