Wolverhampton Wanderers want to take Ivan Toney on loan – but Steve McClaren is reluctant to let him leave.

Toney has made three substitute appearances for Newcastle United since joining from Northampton Town in the summer.

Toney is scoring goals for the Under 21s, training with us but there will be a point when we do think yeah, but that is not yet.

The 19-year-old has also scored on his last four appearances for the club’s Under-21s.

Wolves this week signed United defender Mike Williamson on a one-match loan, and Kenny Jackett, the Championship club’s head coach, is keen to take Toney to Molineux.

Newcastle head coach McClaren said: “Williamson needs games and it is a month, good standard, good club and good manager.

“Toney is scoring goals for the Under-21s – and training with us – but there will be a point when we do think yeah (he is ready to go on loan), but that is not yet.”

Burton Albion are also understood to be keen to sign Toney on loan. Their manager, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink, watched Toney play for the Under-21s against Derby County this week.

Toney is understood to be keen to play regular first-team football.
